What is a breast lift?
Mastopexy is the clinical name for a breast lift. This is one of the most common procedures we do here and it will reshape your breast and get it back to it natural position. Women that have experienced large weight loss, one or more pregnancies might get a breast that is not in the position or shape of the breast they want. Sagging breast can be helped by a breast lift to get back the perkier and original breast you had.
How is a breast lift done?
A breast lift is done under general anesthetic and is one of the common procedures we do here. It takes about 1.5 to 3.5 hours to do and you will stay 1 to 2 nights at the hospital after the procedure. In total you should stay about 10 days to be able to have the surgery and the post-op checkup with the surgeon after about seven days to see how you are recovering and remove the stitches.
The inverted T or anchor incision is the most common procedure to do a breast lift and give the best result. It will give a natural shape of the breast and the nipple will be moved to the correct position. Many people also add a breast implant as a combination to the breast lift.
Minimal scarring after breast lift
A breast lift will leave a scar from the nipple down to the breast crease and along the crease. The shape will be like a upside down “T”. Normally this will not be visibly even if you wear a bikini or bra. Even if the scar will be read from the beginning it will fade with time.
Preparing for breast lift surgery
You have to stop smoking and drinking alcohol at least two weeks before and after the surgery to help with healing and recovery. You should also stop any vitamins, supplements and even some medicine like birth control medicine. List the medicines you take for the surgeon in the evaluation so we can advice you what to do.
What are the risks of complications involved?
Even with only a small risk of complications it is important to know about them when deciding about a surgery. A breast lift is generally a very safe procedure. Not common but there can be complications like. bleeding, infections, poor healing, uneven nipples or permanent loss of feeling in the nipples or breast. To reduce the risk of complications like this it is important to follow the surgeons advice carefully. Antibiotic is always prescribed to minimize the risk for infection.
Breast lift recovery time
A day after the surgery you will still be tired but to recover best you should be up and move around to help with recovery. After a week or two you might be back to work depending on how you feel and what you do for work.
You should avoid to push hard against your breast and be careful with the incision until it is healed. Heavy lifting should be avoided for about 4 to 6 weeks.
